Onion is an important and indispensable item and can be found in almost every kitchen around the world. The green leaves and bulbs are eaten either raw or used in the preparation of several recipes.

Modern scientific research supports many of the traditional uses for onion. Onion contains thiosulphinate, a compound that is effective in killing many common bacteria, including Salmonella typhi, Pseudomonas aeriginosa, and Escherichia coli.

Onion has been used to treat diabetes and is reputed to lower blood sugar levels. Externally; fresh onion juice is used to prevent bacterial and fungal infections.

An onion is an immediate cure for fever, common cold, cough, sore throat and allergies. A mixture of onion juice and honey can cure these problems easily.

Equal quantities of raw onion juice and honey,taken twice a day are effective for stomachache and indigestion.

Onion juice can cure burnt skin or an insect bite or a bee bite. It can cause a burning sensation when applied but can heal very effectively. Onion juice is also used for toothaches and tooth decaying.

One of the well-known tricks to remove dark patches or pigments on our face is to apply onion and turmeric juice on that area. Onion juice is also used to cure ear and eye problems. Warm onion juice dropped in the ear is said to help relieve earache. Baked onion is used to draw pus from abscesses. This juice is used for infants as eye drops for clear vision.

Other pharmacological activities of onion include inhibition of carcinomas, immune-suppression and neuro-protective effects. It is highly effective against pathogenic gram-positive bacteria and dermatophytic fungi and also promotes beneficial microorganisms.
