Alzheimer’s disease

The lack of adequate consumption of fruit and vegetables has become a worldwide dietary concern since fruits and vegetables play a pivotal role in attaining and maintaining good health. Fruit and vegetable juices may play an important role in delaying the onset of Alzheimer’s disease, particularly among those who are at high risk for the disease.

Bioactive secondary plant metabolites like flavonoids, carotenoids, and plant sterols, have been linked to health protection in in vitro, in vivo, and clinical research studies.

Evidence suggests that oxidative damage caused by the β-amyloid peptide in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease may be hydrogen peroxide mediated. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) participate in many chemical reactions leading to damage in several molecular species including lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids and this can cause oxidative stress. Oxidative stress can lead to hypertension, cancer, atherosclerosis, diabetes, Alzheimer, Parkinson and other diseases.

Alzheimer’s disease is a disease of the brain that causes problems with memory, thinking and behavior. It is the most common form of dementia. It is not a normal part of aging. Alzheimer’s gets worse over time. Although symptoms can vary widely, the first problem many people notice is forgetfulness severe enough to affect their ability to function at home or at work, or to enjoy hobbies.

There are no available treatments that stop or reverse the progression of the disease, which worsens as it progresses, and eventually leads to death.
